Agenda

  • This provides us with some additional opportunities this year
  • ELL insturction is a high priority for Hillcrest and for the district. The majority of professional development the past two years has been around building oral language capacity and strategies related to oral language.
    • WIDA conference filled up really quickly, we are on the wait list but did not get in. There is another conference in the spring(TESOL).
    • We will also be doing more math progress monitoring this year through Acadiance (similar to DIBELS, but for math skills)
    • K-3 English teachers and special education teachers are now participating in a state-sponsored training (Letters) that is mandated on early literacy and focusing on EL.It includes synchronous and asynchronous professional development as well as in-school coaching.
    • Discussion centered around whether we can supplement this and use Land Trust funds to include the Portuguese teachers in the same training (the state has not included them).
  • Follow-up: Spencer will inquire at the state what the cost is to add the grade 1-2 Portuguese teachers to the Letters training. Based on what he learns, he will send a vote by email to allocate funs to add those teachers to the training and coaching.
  • Hillcrest was accepted to participate in WIN Culture whole-school training as well through A2A, but declined participating schoolwide because of the teacher's being overwhelmed with the number of trainings happening now.
    • Spencer sent a bid from the A2A group to do Hillcrest training outside of the state-sponsored training.
    • Follow-up: Spencer will follow up with USBE to find out how A2A was selected and what their impact data were, how it was reviewed for fit. Spencer will also look into the possibility of an external evaluator to help us understand the outcomes we expect from the consultancy and whether we get the expected outcomes.
    • Brent shared a resource on developing logic modles that will help frame the conversation to look at planned inputs and expected outcomes: Click HERE to view
  • Safe Routes to School

  • Funds are available but there is a quick turnaround (due by 5 pm on October 8th). Some needs have been identified by the community around the 1500 E and 900 N intersection (corner by the church and the school). The crosswalks are not at the intersections and kids don’t go down to the crosswalk, they cross at the corners.
    • Other concerns: Size of sidewlaks on Ellendale and 1500 E, crossing guard has reported that it's a tricky intersection.
    • Follow-up: Spencer will follow up with Brent to work on a proposal to UDOT and follow up with UDOT on the possibilities for the grant.
  • Membership
  • Ryan Frazier has attended multiple meetins and is eligible to become a member.
    • Sara proposed we vote Ryan in as a member
    • Brent Chamberlain 2nd
    • All in favor
  • Community Input
  • Clarification of COVID protocols
    • Unless a student test positive, there aren't any rules for quarantine, etc.
    • Testing is up to families unless we reach a certain number of cases in a class or in the school
    • Spencer is recommending, but cannot require that theachers wear masks. last year there were extra funds for teacher absences and subs, but no funds this year and a sub shortage so we're trying to keep teachers healthy
    • Teachers can remind kids to wear masks, but can't enforce
    • The Superintendent is meeting with BRHD today and then with the principals so there may be some COVID updates that we will hear more about later today or next week.
    • Lunch time is problematic - we don't have the staff and funds to do the cleaning and distancing we did last year

Next Meeting:

  • October 1, 2021 7:00am
